What does the current research suggest about the effects of violent video games on aggressive behavior?

What will be an ideal response?

• Current research is equivocal (mixed), but most finds some negative effects.
• The negative effects do not amount to actual aggressive or violent behavior, however. The majority of individuals who play violent video games do not commit violent acts.
• Increasingly, however, research is supporting a negative effect on empathy; that is, children and adolescents who engage in violent video games show decreased empathy toward others and more positive attitudes toward violent behavior.
• When DIRECT effects on behavior are found, they are especially found for children already exposed to violence, such as in the home, and/or children who have displayed violent behavior in the past.
• Recent research is focusing on the context of playing games—i.e., alone or with peers, and the extent of active participation in the scenarios.
