Explain the main non-modifiable risk factors associated with chronic disease
Non-modifiable Risk Factors:
Firstly, the aging of the Baby Boomer generation has meant there are now more individuals over the age of 65 than ever before. Most chronic diseases manifest at a later age, so with increased life expectancy, older individuals are more likely to develop a chronic illness and-more importantly-multiple chronic conditions.
Secondly, genetic predisposition/heredity may contribute to increased risk of developing certain chronic conditions in specific populations. This is especially true for certain ethnic minority groups, who are more likely to be diagnosed with certain chronic illnesses. For instance, the Pima Native American tribe has been extensively studied by the National Institute of Diabetes and Digestive and Kidney Diseases for the past 50 years. Within this span of time, researchers have determined a strong genetic predisposition for diabetes among Pima tribe members that has shed light on the contribution of genetics among certain ethnic groups may have for certain chronic illness.
