Discuss the implications of lateralization on musical abilities and learning.

What will be an ideal response?

Researchers have investigated the lateralization of musical abilities. Following a stroke that damaged his left hemisphere, composer Maurice Ravel retained his ability to judge pitch and to recognize a piece of music he heard. However, Ravel was unable to play the piano, recognize written music, or compose music. Ravel's outcomes show us that some musical abilities are lateralized to the right hemisphere but that a simple "language-on-the-left, music-on-the-right" model of hemispheric functioning is incorrect. The extent to which music is lateralized is still debatable. Different aspects of music appear to produce more activity in one hemisphere or the other. The left hemi- sphere reacts to expectations regarding melodies (the main theme of a piece), while the right reacts more to expectations regarding harmonics (notes supporting the main theme)
