Giving information is not the same as establishing fees. So if a firm allowed it, a legal assistant could
respond to questions that are purely informational, such as if certain legal services are
charged a flat fee, or what an attorney’s hourly rate is. I think it is also appropriate for a legal
assistant to explain to a prospective client the difference between fees and costs (assuming
that the firm allows this).
