Zhu Di’s Treasure Fleet of 317 ships, crewed by 27,000 men, made seven expeditions between 1404 and 1435 to India, Saudi Arabia, and down the African coast, trading silks, porcelain, lacquer ware, and iron (Map 18.4). Di’s first journey was to Calicut, India, the center of the fifteenth-century spice trade. After this, spice was the most important commodity of the Treasure Fleet, and Calicut became a regular port of call for the fleet, as did Malacca, on the Malay peninsula, where cloves, nutmeg, sambal oelek (a red hot chilli paste), and other Indonesian spices were available. They visited Southeast Asia, where in Siam the hardwood mahogany was discovered. Pearls and other precious stones were collected in the Persian Gulf.
