Explain the role of independent reading in school.

What will be an ideal response?

Independent reading leads to increased motivation, engagement, and student reading achievement. Unfortunately, students are not given ample time for reading in school. Oftentimes teachers assign reading for homework, while the reality is that most students do not read outside of school, and the reading done in school amounts to only 15 minutes per day. Time spent reading is correlated to reading achievement, so time for reading in school needs to be provided and increased.
