Which of Fromm’s existential needs are met for Marla? Which are not? Explain.
What will be an ideal response?
The relatedness need and the rootedness need appear to be met because of her relationship with her mother. The identity need does not appear to be met. Because of Marla’s dependence on her mother, she cannot develop her unique self. Marla’s need for excitation and stimulation also does not appear to be met because the case study indicates that her activity level is very low. We can not totally evaluate the transcendence need from the information in the case study but Marla does not have children and so, at least, that method of being creative has not been utilized. Marla’s frame of orientation seems to revolve around her relationship with her mother. Maintaining this relationship seems to be her ultimate goal and her mother appears to be the object to which she is most devoted.
