In their classic study of family violence, Richard Gelles and Murray Straus found that 16% of surveyed families had experienced husband–wife assaults. In police departments around the country, 60 to 70% of evening calls involve domestic disputes. Predictive factors include presence of alcohol, access to weapons, stepchild in the home, estrangement, hostility toward dependency, excessive brooding, social learning, socioeconomic factors, flashes of anger, military service, having been battered as a child, and unpredictability.
