Why do people form groups? How do teams differ to groups, and what are some of the major problems associated with teamwork? How can such problems be minimized?

What will be an ideal response?

A competent answer will explain the main reasons why people form groups (belongings, safety, and identity). The keen student might also add that they form groups because they are forced to by their boss, their professor, their teacher etc). Students must show why groups and teams differ (essentially through psychological contracts), and if they do not believe they differ they must provide good justification. The student should then raise the issues of social loafing, and groupthink, and show a good understanding of the concepts and their origins. A better student will go beyond the textbook, and provide deeper and broader suggestions of how such problems can be minimized in groups. In other words, students should be rewarded for going beyond the prescribed text.
