The 5E instructional model enables students to work on a scientific problem in order to see its relationship to their current conceptual understanding and their new conceptual understanding achieved through the process of the model. They become dissatisfied with their current conceptual understanding, gain insight into the new conceptual understanding, and realize that the new idea is plausible and fruitful. The 5E instructional model enables the student to experience disequilibrium with their current conceptual understanding and to arrive at a new equilibration with the newly constructed conceptual understanding. The five phases of the model with a brief description of each is presented below.
A. Engagement—Engage the student in the learning task.
B. Exploration—Allow time for students to explore ideas. Engagement brings about disequilibrium, while exploration initiates the process of equilibration.
C. Explanation—The teacher directs student attention to specific aspects of the engagement and exploration experiences.
D. Elaboration—Involve students in further experiences that extend or clarify the concepts, processes, or skills.
E. Evaluation—The teacher administer tests or performance activities; students can also evaluate themselves.
