Families have realized substantial changes as a result of changes in society since the 1970s. Given what you know about these changes, what suggestions could you provide to contemporary families who seek to maintain happy relationships and raise children well?

What will be an ideal response?

1. Practice gender flexibility in caregiving and paid work (i.e., both parents, regardless of gender, can and should participate in paid work, childcare, and household tasks) so that families can get through transitions more smoothly.
2. Ensure that caregiving and housework are actually being distributed equally between partners (i.e., avoid women carrying more of the burden for the second shift).
3. If a couple breaks up or divorces, minimize conflict, ensure thaboth parents maintain a consistent presence in children’s lives, and pool economic resources as much as possible to reduce the possibility of negative outcomes for children.
4. Acknowledge that family structures are diverse and changing – the traditional, heterosexual, nuclear family is far from the norm.
