Why do cells need catalysts for many of the chemical reactions they run? What types of molecules function as catalysts in cells?
What will be an ideal response?
Reacting molecules need to have a certain activation energy in order for the reaction to actually happen?this is the energy required for the initial breaking of bonds. Unfortunately for living organisms, the activation energy for many essential chemical reactions is very high. Cells rely on catalysts that lower the activation energy of reactions and allow them to happen more quickly. These catalysts are large, complex proteins called enzymes.
