• in both regions, civilizations appeared and the hunting/gathering way of life soon gave way to AGRICULTURE
• the settled village life transformed society to become hierarchical
• lots of debate (began in 19th century when whites tried to claim that Africans were inferior and incapable of civilization) regarding whether EGYPTIANS came from Mesopotamians, both African/southwest asia, or whether BLACK AFRICANS came from both Egyptians and Mesopotamians
• Egypt contributed to the spread of civilization and strongly influenced Greece and western civilization
