Using exploratory research, descriptive research, and explanatory research, briefly outline how a researcher goes about studying domestic violence on your campus.

What will be an ideal response?

Ans: Exploratory designs refer to studies that attempt to explore unknown territories. They aim at investigating, exploring, or attempting to figure out a new, innovative thread of knowledge. Exploratory studies can be quantitative or qualitative. To decide whether a study is exploratory or not, the researcher would need to consult the literature review. Is his specific topic an innovation that is not even included in the literature? An exploratory study usually investigates a new relationship between variables or an existing relationship between variables but on a new population. For the descriptive section, the student must discuss the intention is to answer “how” the phenomenon of interest happens rather than attempting to establish a relationship between two or more variables. The student must indicate his or her intent on describing a design that allows for a deeper understanding of the phenomenon and understanding the details about the people involved and their experiences with the particular problem. For the explanatory discussion, the student should focus on explaining the reasons behind a phenomenon, relationship, or event. Explanatory studies are very helpful in understanding the question “why” and clarifying the degree of influence of one variable versus another on the dependent variable. This type of research does not set out to explore something new, nor does it attempt to gain a deeper understanding of how something works. Instead, explanatory studies seek to explain the reasons behind an already known and/or established relationship.
