Floyd Collins, the son of a poor farmer, grew up exploring caves in the region of Kentucky, long famous for its fabulous caverns. Crystal Cave, located on the Collins' farm, had exceptionally beautiful crystal formations, but attracted few tourists because the cave was so far from the main road leading to popular and profitable Mammoth Cave. Hoping to find another entrance to Mammoth Cave, or a new cave closer to the tourists' route, Floyd began exploring other caves in the region and soon found what he thought was a promising venture in Sand Cave. On Friday, January 30, 1925, Floyd was crawling out through a narrow passage in Sand Cave when he dislodged a rock from the ceiling, pinning his leg and trapping him. The attempted rescue of Floyd Collins set off one of the biggest media frenzies of its time.
