1. Simulating, or displaying an emotion when you're not feeling any. Example: When watching a football game with hard-core fans, I act like I'm upset when our team fumbles and ecstatic when they score, but in reality I could not care less.
2. Inhibiting, or displaying no emotion when in fact you're feeling one. Example: I tripped on the sidewalk on the way to class and was embarrassed. But outwardly I acted nonchalant.
3. Intensifying, or creating the appearance that you're feeling emotions more strongly than you are. Example: A friend tells an anecdote which I find mildly amusing. However, I laugh loudly and heartily with her.
4. Deintensifying, or giving the impression that you're feeling emotions less strongly than you actually are. Example: When my parents died, I appeared to be stronger, than I was feeling, in front of my daughter.
5. Masking, or showing one emotion while feeling something different. Example: On the Oscars, Tonys, or other award shows, I watch those who don't win. They never look disappointed, but almost always appear ecstatic that another person won.
