Determine the amount of rebar needed for the continuous footings shown in Figures 10.36 and 10.37. Allow for two inches of cover and extend the dowels 15 inches into the wall. Add 10 percent for lap and waste to the continuous bars.
What will be an ideal response?
From Problem 21, the length of the footing is 119.33 ft. The dowels are calculated as follows:
Number of spaces = 119.33? / 1? = 120 spaces
Add 1 to get the number of dowels – Use 121 dowels
The dowels extend 15 inches into the wall, 10 inches (12? – 2?) into the footing, and then turn and continue for 13 inches (30? / 2 – 2?). Their total length is 38 inches.
Total bar length (lf) = 121 dowel × 38? per dowel / 12 in per ft = 383.2 lf
Total bar weight (pounds) = 383.2 lf × 0.668 pounds per lf = 256 pounds
The continuous bars are calculated as follows:
Total length of long bars (lf) = 119.33? × 4 bars = 477.3 lf
Total weight of long bars (pounds) = 477.3 lf × 0.668 pounds per lf = 319 pounds
Add for waste and lap.
Total weight of long bars (pounds) = 319 pounds × 1.10 = 351 pounds
Total weight of rebar (pounds) = 256 pounds + 351 pounds = 607 pounds
