What is a giant motor unit potential?
What will be an ideal response?
A giant motor unit potential is an abnormal finding during a minimal effort contraction as detected in an EMG evaluation. It usually indicates that there has been a loss of anterior horn cells, and the muscle fibers that have lost their anterior horn cell are reinnervated by the surrounding intact anterior horn cells. The sum of the original fibers plus the fibers that have lost their original anterior horn cell creates a larger motor unit with a resulting larger electrical potential.
