Explain the system of feudalism and its obligations of social reciprocity
What will be an ideal response?
Feudalism is a system of social organization that generally required service from a sworn loyal vassal to a lord in exchange for some kind of benefit, usually land. A vassal would take an oath of fealty to his lord, with the understanding of specific demands placed on him in exchange for rewards to be given. A vassal would usually receive an estate of land, known as a fief, to manage, along with the people on it and their labor, and the revenues it generated. In exchange for his fief, he was required to perform military service for forty days each year. In later years, vassals often took advantage of the opportunity to provide cash instead of service to the lord, which the lord often preferred because he would then be able to use the cash to hire a professional army. A vassal would often divide his fief among his own supporters and demand loyalty of them in a process known as subinfeudation. Although primarily a Frankish system of land allocation, this relationship can be found in most parts of Europe with various permutations.
