Explain the efficacy of phonics instruction.

What will be an ideal response?


Research has shown that systematic, explicit teaching of phonics is a necessary component of student word recognition instruction. Over fifty years of research supports the teaching of phonics and not research suggests that phonics instruction hurts children in any way. Ultimately phonics instruction should be differentiated. Children need different doses of phonics instruction often at a different pace. The ultimate goal should always be comprehension, and the principles learned should always be applied to connected text.
