Probiotics are the 10 trillion live beneficial microbes which colonize the GI tract and confer health benefits. Probiotic food sources include: yogurt, kefir, kimchi, and sauerkraut. Different strains of beneficial bacteria positively impact different body systems. Prebiotics are non-digestible resistant starches that support the health of the beneficial bacteria–the probiotics. Prebiotic food sources include: bananas, garlic, onions, asparagus, leeks, squash, jicama, beets, carrots, turnips, parsnips, sweet potatoes, artichokes, oats, and barley.
