How is body image distorted in bulimia nervosa differently than in anorexia nervosa? Why is this an important distinction?
People with bulimia nervosa may see themselves as being a bit overweight. They will control their eating patterns up to a point and then proceed to binge on foods. They may also exercise a lot. They feel ashamed of the fact that they binge and then purge but they do not know how to break the cycle.
People with anorexia nervosa have a fear of becoming fat. They see themselves as fat even if they are very underweight. They do not ever binge because they are afraid of gaining even a fraction of a pound. A person with anorexia sees their need for self-control to be greater than their need for food.
