The Bayley-III consists of five scales that measure gross and fine motor skills, cognitive function, language, socioemotional skills, and adaptive behaviors. Scores on the tests do not correlate to intelligence scores at age 18 because IQ tests measure different things than the Bayley-III. Scores vary considerably from one testing session to another, which means that poor scores, in particular, should be interpreted with care. Children should be tested more than once to detect possible issues with neurological health, chart developmental paths, and diagnose neurological disorders and intellectual disabilities. The test is valuable as a screening tool to identify infants who could benefit from medical and developmental intervention.
