Please explain what “feature detectors” are, and how they work, and how they are related to childmaltreatment.
What will be an ideal response?
Feature detectors are certain areas of the brain, including the fusiform gyrus and superior temporal sulcus that help monitor for environmental threats. They detectors monitor things such as facial expressions, hand movement, and tone of voice. They send information they get to the amygdala for evaluation in conjunction with the information provided by the hippocampus and prefrontal cortex. If interactions between child and parent are threatening, then the feature detectors will be active if a different way than in a healthy parent child interaction.
