Briefly describe the makeup of VNTRs (variable number tandem repeats)

What will be an ideal response?

VNTRs are repeating DNA sequences of about 15-100 base pairs long that are found within and between genes. These sequences may be repeated to give regions 1000-5000 bp in length. They are dispersed throughout the genome.
