Compare and contrast delta, alpha, gamma waves.

What will be an ideal response?

Delta waves are associated with sleep and generally are less than 4 Hz (Hertz). Theta waves occur when people are daydreaming or experience drowsiness and are associated with 4 to 8 Hz (Heinrich, et al., 2007; Myers & Young, 2012). Alpha waves represent the brain and neurons readiness for action but in a standby state (8 to 13 Hz). Also, alpha waves are associated with a relaxed state. Beta waves (13-30 Hz) are associated with thinking and focusing, and maintaining attention, whereas high beta waves (20-32 Hz) are associated with hyperactivity and anxiety (Myers & Young 2012). Finally gamma waves in essence serves to bind the other waves and appears to be involved in connectivity between different brain regions, (30-80 Hz). Colgin, Denning, Fyhn, Hafting, Bonnevie, Jensen, Moser and Moser (2009) described gamma waves as a binding mechanism for neurons so they fire together. Gamma waves have been associated with cognitive functioning (Colgin, et al., 2009).
