They nourished each other and provided a cultural exchange that inspired new thinking and economic growth. Faint links were beginning to put parts of this central zone in touch with northern Europe and parts of Africa. In the rest of the world, isolated cultures, still organized in kinship groups or chiefdoms or small states, were able, at best, to develop regional networks on a relatively small scale.
