Wernicke’s encephalopathy is the experience of neurological symptoms caused by biochemical lesions of the central nervous system after exhaustion of B-vitamin reserves, in particular thiamine (vitamin B1). Thiamine deficiency is common in chronic heavy drinkers. If left untreated it can become Korsakoff’s psychosis, which can produce permanent brain damage and result in memory loss. Consequently, one other medical intervention during the alcohol detoxification period is the provision of daily thiamine.
