Evidence-based research helps identify effective strategies through the evaluation and analysis of ongoing programs. Evidence-based practices are being used by the juvenile justice system to establish best-practice guidelines that provide policymakers and juvenile justice administrators insight into what works best to control juvenile crime and rehabilitate youthful offenders.

Two examples of evidence-based initiatives in juvenile justice are the Blueprints for Violence Prevention program developed by the Center for the Study and Prevention of Violence at the University of Colorado–Boulder, and the OJJDP’s Model Programs Guide (MPG). The Blueprints study is a large-scale prevention initiative that identifies model programs and provides technical support to help sites choose and implement programs that have been proven to be effective. The Model Programs Guide is intended to assist communities in implementing evidence-based prevention and intervention programs that can make a difference in the lives of children. Juvenile justice practitioners, administrators, and researchers use the MPG database to initiate programs that have already proven their ability to enhance accountability, ensure public safety, and reduce recidivism.
