Describe the symptoms of muscular dystrophy
What will be an ideal response?
Muscular dystrophy (MD) encompasses more than 30 distinct hereditary pathological conditions, which have in common a progressive degeneration of contractile elements and their replacement by fibrous tissue. The gradual muscle wasting is characterized by progressive weakness over a period of years. Typically, a patient with MD begins to show symptoms of muscle weakness at about 2 to 3 years of age, becomes wheelchair bound when he is 10 to 12 years old, and dies within the next 15 or so years, either from respiratory failure when his respiratory muscles become too weak or from heart failure when his heart becomes too weak.
