Why are the cells of the macula particularly sensitive to the effects of UV light?

When light rays pass through the cornea and lens of the eye they pass through the vitreous humor and strike the rods and cones in the central portion of the retina known as the macula. The light rays may also include some ultraviolet light that is higher energy than visible light and may cause damage to the delicate cells of the retina.
