Discuss the behavioral risk factors that impact infant mortality

Behavioral factors, including lifestyle and health care, can impact preterm birth and infant mortality. One of the most important behavioral factors related to infant mortality is a woman's overall health status. Good preconception health care means living a safe, healthy lifestyle and managing any current health conditions before getting pregnant. Smoking tobacco, both during pregnancy and after childbirth, is a risk factor. Smoking during pregnancy increases the risk of a baby being born too early and contributes to low birth weight. Both of these are serious risk factors for infant death. Smoking during and after pregnancy is also a risk factor for SIDS. Alcohol use during pregnancy contributes to certain birth defects and fetal alcohol spectrum disorders. Receiving late prenatal care (starting after the second trimester) or no prenatal care contributes to the risk of having a baby with health problems. Women of childbearing age can lower their risk of poor birth outcomes by adopting recommended healthy behaviors. For example, taking folic acid supplements before and during pregnancy helps to prevent major defects in the baby's spine and brain. Maintaining a healthy weight is important, as women who are overweight or obese are at higher risk for complications during pregnancy. Engaging in regular physical activity is another healthy pregnancy behavior.?
