Please define "shock incarceration". Next, please provide a detailed example of a program that may be labeled as shock incarceration
What will be an ideal response?
Shock incarceration refers to a brief period of imprisonment that precedes a term of supervised probation in hopes that the harsh reality of prison will deter future criminal activity. A variety of shock incarceration formats are used, and they go by a number of names—shock probation, shock parole, intermittent incarceration, split sentence, and boot camp. The programs vary in design and organization, but all feature a short jail or prison term followed by supervised release. The target population is young offenders with no previous incarcerations in adult prisons. An estimated 10% of all adults on probation received a split sentence consisting of some combination of incarceration and probation (Bonczar & Glaze, 1999). In shock probation, an offender is sentenced to imprisonment for a short time (the shock) and then released and resentenced to probation. The prison experience is thought to be so distasteful that the offender will fear returning, and thereafter avoid criminal behavior. The original shock probation program was established in Ohio in 1965 . It was praised for making an unforgettable initial experience while not allowing full immersion into the institutional subculture, assisting in reintegration into the community, and making offenders more receptive to probation (Vito & Allen, 1981). Another type of shock incarceration is correctional boot camp programs.
