International Classification of Diseases, Ninth Revision, Clinical Modificationsis a system of standardized codes to classify mortality and morbidity. ICD-­?9-­?CM diagnosis codes are required on insurance claims to justify the need for the procedure or service performed. ICD -­?9-­?CM is also used to statistically track causes of morbidity and death.

Students might also remember that the first two volumes provide a listing andan index of diagnosis codes, whereas the third volume lists codes for hospital inpatient procedures.
