In sub-Sahara Africa, why is marriage a risk factor for women in terms of contracting HIV?

What will be an ideal response?

Ans: There are gender expectations for how men and women should behave before marriage. For example, it is acceptable for men to sleep around with various partners before getting married; however, this is putting women who are getting married at risk for HIV infection, because their husbands may have contracted HIV/AIDS before marriage by hooking up with other women. It is socially desirable to marry a man who has been with multiple women before marriage. This speaks to the gender dynamics in society.
