Diagnostic assessment is what we commonly think of as pretesting, serving the function of letting us know what students already know about a topic or unit to come. Formative assessment helps monitor student progress and, in doing so, provides valuable information to help with lesson planning. Summative assessment comes at the end of a unit of study and is used to evaluate the amount and quality of learning or a product. Diagnostic assessment comes first. Then formative assessment and instruction alternate throughout the unit, with summative assessment at the end.
