What is the purpose and general process of class switching of immunoglobulin genes?

What will be an ideal response?

Ans: Class switching occurs when a particular lymphocyte stops producing one type of immunoglobulin (usually IgM) and begins producing another type. This may occur as the cells are stimulated to alter the type of immune response. Class switching is accompanied by a deletion, brought about by intramolecular recombination that brings a new CH gene segment to the vicinity of the expressed V-D-J segments. Any further class switching is then limited to the remaining downstream CH gene segments.
