Recall Walker’s case from the “What About Walker?” activity on Perspectives & Resources Page 4. Walker had a bike accident that left him with a minor concussion. After his return to school, his teacher noticed that Walker:
What will be an ideal response?
? Had difficulty comprehending and remembering information he had read
? Was failing weekly quizzes and tests
? Appeared to have decreased motivation
? Exhibited difficulty attending to and completing his work
The teacher spoke to Walker’s mom, who indicated that since the accident Walker had been moody and agitated. As a result of her growing concerns, the teacher determined that Walker was an appropriate candidate for the pre-referral process.
4 In Walker’s case, what role might the general education teacher play at each stage of the pre-referral process?
The general educator should play a huge role into every stage of the pre-referral process. The teacher had already spent half of the school year with Walker and noticed a big change in his school performance and demeanor. Ms. Peters also spoke with Walkers mom and heard directly from her how Walker has changed. Ms. Peters can definitely collect lots of data on Walker, share with the team things that Walker excels at and what his strengths are, come up with some ideas on what kind of intervention they’re looking at for Walker, implement it, and then come back to the group and share if the intervention has helped Walker or not. (It is NOT solely up to Ms. Peters but she can be a part of the pre-referral process for every stage)
