What is the difference between aliased and anti-aliased edges?

What will be an ideal response?

An aliased edge is a hard edge-the hard "stair-stepped" pixels are very obvious. The edge is noticeably blunt. This is why aliased edges are seldom used. An anti-aliased edgeis a crisp but smoother edge. With an anti-aliased edge, Photoshop creates a smooth transition between the edge and its background using many shades of the edge pixel color.
