What can cause a dissociative disorder?

What will be an ideal response?

Suggested response:
? Dissociative disorders are a pathological response to trauma experiences
– real or threatened;
? Can result from childhood experiences of sexual or severe physical abuse
and during a time when the child's personality is developing;
? By dissociating, the person's feelings, thoughts, perceptions (and
memories) of the trauma can be pushed away from consciousness; and
? This allows for more "normal" functioning;
? Keep in mind that dissociation can develop in adulthood (although this
happens less frequently) and also as a response to trauma such as war
experiences, violence, rape or assault.
