Looking forward, the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention has created a list of health priorities it calls "winnable battles in public health." Winnable battles have a large-scale impact on the health of many, and there are evidence-based solutions to address these health issues. Each battle area is a leading cause of illness, injury, disability, or death and/or leads to enormous societal costs. In 2010 and 2011, the agency declared modern-day battles with food safety, health care-associated infections, HIV infections, motor vehicle injuries, obesity/nutrition, unintended pregnancy, and tobacco use.
There are a few similarities in the lists of twentieth-century achievements and targets for current public health improvements. Immunizations, motor vehicle injuries, food and nutrition, family planning, and tobacco appear on both lists. The topic areas are similar, but the behavioral risk factors and/or the target audiences have changed. For example, with tobacco, early work focused on public awareness and tobacco cessation in non-specified audiences. As a result, smoking rates were cut in half: from 42% to approximately 21%. Looking forward, desired achievements related to tobacco are to decrease exposure to secondhand smoke in vulnerable populations, increase cessation in "hard-core" smokers, and reduce the proportion of new smokers. ?
