Thin film solar cells are made of layers of semiconductor materials only a few micrometers thick. This thin film technology has made it possible for solar cells to be combined with various non-crystalline materials to form dual function building components including: rooftop or solar shingles, roof tiles, building facades, and glazing for skylights or atria. These materials form part of a home’s structure and are capable of electric power generation. In addition to their dual function, they are attractive and durable, but at present are lower in photovoltaic efficiency and more expensive than an equal capacity small solar electric system.
