Pick a topic that you might effectively teach through a cooperative learning approach. Then, using guidelines presented in the textbook, describe how you will: a. Form your cooperative groups b. Foster interdependence of group members c. Assess what students have learned d. Enhance students' ability to work cooperatively with their peers over the long run
What will be an ideal response?
The response should first identify a specific topic that might realistically be taught with a cooperative learning approach. Parts a through d below should be addressed within the context of this topic.
a. The procedure used to form cooperative groups should ensure that students in each group can work effectively together.
b. Interdependence of group members can be achieved by (1 ) assigning different roles to different group members, or (2 ) giving each group member a unique body of information that he or she must teach to the rest of the group. The response needs to describe only one of these strategies.
c. Cooperative learning is most effective when students are individually accountable for their own learning. (The response might also suggest that extra credit be given if all members of a group achieve at high levels; this point is optional, however.)
d. Strategies for enhancing students' cooperative skills include these (the response needs to mention at least two):
• Provide guidelines about how to behave within the group.
• Monitor group interactions and give guidance if necessary.
• Ask students to evaluate their effectiveness in working as a group.
• Reward students for success of the group as a whole (thus encouraging them to help one another learn).
