Explain how scientists link climate change to energy policy. Discuss why climate change policy is considered an ethical issue by many individuals. Finally, explain two policy proposals that have been considered to reduce use of fossil fuels and the economic and political feasibility issues of each.

What will be an ideal response?

Greenhouse gas emissions of carbon dioxide from fossil fuels lead to rising global temperatures and ensuing environmental impacts. It is an ethical issue because doing nothing will affect future generations (intergenerational equity), and the impacts of climate change affect different groups. Tax increases on fossil fuels have been considered, but they are politically unpopular and affect the poor most dramatically. CAFÉ standards for fuel efficiency have been increased recently but often involve higher investments by the government and may dampen the economy.
