The yolk sac and the liver produce blood cells in the embryo and early fetus through the first three months of gestation. The fetal spleen takes over this function from the third to the seventh months. Once developed, the bone marrow is the site of hematopoiesis from the fourth month of gestation throughout the remainder of fetal development and into adulthood.
