include both verbal or nonverbal responses.
You were in a rush on your way to work, but you wanted to stop by a local department store
and pick up some socks that were on sale. You quickly selected your purchase, and made your
way toward the register. Two women behind the counter were having a great time talking,
obviously not about business, and were ignoring your presence.
What will be an ideal response?
Assertive messages are messages that express one?s opinions or goals without stepping
on the toes of the other person — that is, without taking advantage of them or ignoring
their needs and goals. Aggressive messages are messages designed to get what you
want, regardless of the other person?s feelings or concerns.
Responses may vary. The assertive message will include ?I? statements that are
descriptive. ?I would like to pay for my socks.? Aggressive messages will include ?you?
language. ?If you would quit yakking, I could get out of here and get to work.?
