Describe evidence of the deterrent effect of the death penalty

What will be an ideal response?

• Although a few early studies have found evidence of capital punishment as deterrence, these have been criticized as methodologically flawed and are not recognized as credible evidence.A more recent study by Mocan and Gittings concludes that there is a deterrent effect of capital punishment. Both their 2003 study and a 2006 study that reexamined the data found that each execution results in five fewer homicides, and commuting a death sentence means five more homicides. However, there is far more evidence that capital punishment does not deter other murders. A 1984 study by Decker and Kohfeld of homicide rates in Illinois from 1933 to 1980 did not identify any differences in rates depending on whether there was a death penalty allowed, a death penalty was allowed but not used, or the death penalty was abolished.A 2006 research report used "model averaging" to weigh averages of a wide set of possible models of deterrence, and concluded there is little empirical evidence of a deterrent effect from capital punishment. One recent study even found that the death penalty increases the number of murders.
