Why should you address your answer to the entire audience, not just who asked?
What will be an ideal response?
It will connect you to the audience and keep everyone interested and involved. Further, it will make it less likely that the person asking the question will become hostile if he or she does not like your answer. It will also decrease the likelihood for the questioner to try and engage you in a one-on-one debate.
