Is it safe for Daisy's baby to visit her in the ICU? How could bonding be facilitated between mother and baby in this environment?

What will be an ideal response?

Suggested response: • There are a number of ways that mother and baby bonding can be established within the ICU setting. Daisy gave birth to a pre-term baby of 31 weeks gestation, who weighed less than 1.5 kg. Her baby would not be able to visit her until it was able to maintain its own airway, and was haemodynamically stable. In compassionate or special cases, a neonatal transport team may be able to bring a ventilated or critically ill baby to meet its mother in the ICU if the mother is unlikely to survive her illness. • To facilitate bonding between mother and baby while they are separated, a baby blanket can be placed on Daisy's chest to obtain her ‘scent' and then taken to the nursery, and placed in the baby's cot. Babies have a strong sense of smell and will recognise the scent of their own mother. • If Daisy's family has recordings of her voice, they can be played to her baby, as the baby will recognise her voice, and be reassured by it. • Taking photographs, videos, keeping mementoes and creating special memories will help Daisy to experience the first few weeks of her baby's life as she is not able to participate in these precious moments.
