A number of terranes were accreted to the western part of North America during the
Mesozoic. An example are the Wrangellian terranes. These terranes added to the North
American continental mass and extended the continent to the west. Accretion of several of
the terranes was responsible for orogenic activity during the Mesozoic Period, including the
Sonoma orogeny.
